Goa Mining Association (GMA) has condemned the attack on a tribal anti-mining activist Nilesh Gaonkar at Verna village in the state last week. GMA President Narayan Bandekar today said in a statement that it was "incredible that anyone involved in organised mining sector or the member of GMA is involved in such a slimy and shameful act".
Bandekar said the mining in Goa had begun more than 50 years ago and "it is well developed with the cooperation and involvement of the locals without any animosity whatsoever". Gaonkar is one of the tribal leaders who are protesting illegal mining in Cauvrem village, 50 km from Panaji.
