MEMC Week: Conversations on Conservation

The 22nd Mines Environment and Mineral Conservation week was observed and celebrated by several mining companies from Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra from 03-01-2011 to 09-01-11.

The week was followed by award presentations on 16-01-11 at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao with an exhibition entitled “Environmental Aspects of Mining.” The Cuddegal Voril Soddo Iron Ore mine of Fomento Resources received first prize in large mechanized mines group and for the best mining model presentation.

For the MEMC week, all participating mines were classified into different categories such as Very large mechanized mines, Large mechanized mines, Medium mechanized mines (A), mechanized mines (G), and Manual mechanized mines of the state of Maharashtra. Mine wise performance based on systematic mining, environment protection and mineral conservation was inspected by inspection teams, formed by the IBM (Indian Bureau of Mines).
 
These teams involved mining engineers, environment officers, mineral processing engineers and geologists from various mining companies. Certain IBM officials were also appointed as observers for these inspection teams. The Chief Guest - Mr. C.S. Gundewar, was accompanied by members such as Mr. R. K. Singha - Controller of Mines (SZ) - Indian Bureau of Mines, Bangalore, Shri Sameer A. Salgaocar - Director of Salgaocar Mining Industries Pvt. Lt., Mr. S.N. Naik - Chief Superintendent of mines, and Mr. A.B. Panigrahi, Regional Controller of Mines - IBM.
