Born on 5th December, 1937 at Sarpe, Candolim-Goa, Mr. Gopalkrishna V. Burye, affectionately known as GVB, began his career as a trainee surveyor and grew to become a qualified assistant surveyor. In 1971 he joined Fomento as a surveyor. On speaking of those days, he says: “Work was limited and all the instruments used for surveying were primitive. There was not even any plotting software at the time.”
Speaking of the changes in the mineral resource industry today, he enthuses: “There is a tremendous change in the usage of equipment with ‘Total Stations’ used in modern surveying. The work gets easier and simpler, due to the high efficiency of the machine in terms of weight, size and usage of power.
When asked about his fondest memory, he narrated: “I had to survey 10-12 mines within a short time span and these Japanese people were getting worried that it might not get completed so they used to keep on asking him and he answered “We will carry on”.
Much like his career at Fomento, the survey was carried out in a systematic manner, with the ability to delegate in an absence of modern technology and performed within the required span of time.
